A scalable mHealth solution that delivers WASH voice and SMSmessages to high-risk populations for diarrhea outbreaks. Proven in clinical trials with >5,500 participants to result in 60% fewer facility visits for diarrhea and a 30% reduction in stunting - ready to implement in conflict and remote contexts.
Implementing frequent household visits for water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion is logistically demanding and costly. Travel, staffing, and materials consume limited budgets. In conflict zones or remote regions, such interventions are not feasible. Implementers need a low-cost light-touch, scalable alternative to keep families safe.
WASHmobile replaces resource-intensive home visits with weekly SMS, voice, and IVR messages to households at highest risk of diarrhea. The program promotes handwashing with soap, safe water storage, and water treatment, delivering targeted reminders exactly when families need them.
Chlorine e-vouchers sent by SMS allow households to redeem vouchers for chlorine tablets for free at local shops and pharmacies, increasing accessibility of chlorine products and reducing distribution costs.
Weekly SMS, voice, and IVR messages deliver lifesaving guidance without costly household visits.
Simple, repeated voice and SMS prompts help families adopt safe hygiene and water practices that last.
Digital vouchers make clean water treatment affordable and available in local shops.
Built to work in fragile, conflict, and remote settings where traditional in-person WASH delivery is very challenging.
WASHmobile has been tested in six randomized controlled trials with more than 5,500 participants. The results are clear: fewer cases of diarrhea, less stunting, and healthier children at a fraction of the cost of traditional WASH campaigns.

Less stunting
Participants evaluated during RCTs
From Bangladesh to Congo, WASHmobile voice and SMS messages have helped families keep children safe from diarrheal diseases.
Ministries, NGOs, and development organizations face increasing pressure to deliver measurable health outcomes with limited financial resources. WASHmobile offers a solution that is not only scientifically proven but also practical and affordable to implement at scale.
Efficiency
Lower resource consumption with more reach

Proven reductions in diarrhea and stunting
Feasibility
Easy integration into national programs
Sustainability
WASH behaviors sustained beyond program delivery
WASHmobile targets high-risk populations for diarrhea and diarrhea outbreaks. This program is healthcare facility initiated with an alert of a diarrhea patient and/or diarrhea outbreak. In the healthcare facility a promoter delivers a WASH module and WASH kit to diarrhea patients.
WASHmobile voice and SMS messages are then sent from a doctor at a local hospital to diarrhea patient households and to those in the community where diarrhea outbreaks are occurring.
Chlorine e-vouchers are also sent by SMS to these households to redeem chlorine tablets for free at local shops and pharmacies to increase chlorination behaviors.
